My research interests are situated at the intersections of the social, intellectual, and religious history of the late ancient Mediterranean world. Prior to my Ph.D. work at Indiana University, I earned an M.A. in Religious Studies from Duke University, an M.Litt. in Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews, and a B.A. in Philosophy, History, and Religion from UC Berkeley. My dissertation, Beginning the Philosophical Life: The Earliest Stages of Monastic Training in Late Ancient Egypt, is a study of the initial steps of monastic training and socialization in fourth- and fifth-century Egypt with particular attention to their connections to traditional philosophical educational and social practices, including spiritual exercises and other elements of identity-construction.
